About the piece

Ireland has a lively and often tragic maritime history dating back to the Stone Age and the Currach Age. The High kings of Ireland transported armies by sea. Voyagers harboured in Ireland as a safe haven. Vikings invaded in the 800 AD attacking inland monasteries. They left behind many Dragon Ships which the Irish modernized and used in more sea conflicts winning their first naval victory in 950 AD. Approximately 1 million Irish emigrated to the UK, America and Australia in Famine Ships which became known as 'Coffin Ships' as so many died before reaching their destination. Ireland also has strong associations with the Titanic. The Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff Shipyards in Belfast in Northern Ireland in 1912. It made it's way to Queenstown, (Cobh) Co.Cork where it set sail for New York on April 11th. It hit an iceberg 3 days later. 1500 died that day. 110 Irish died on the Titanic including 11 men and women from a very small village called Lahardane in Co.Mayo.
