Aphasia 3

About the piece

Aphasia 3 from series Aphasia, 2020. VHS analog still, 34,15 x 27,32 cm. This series is part of a new art research I was working on in the last couple of years on how to approach physical and mental illness through family archives. My grandmother started suffering from aphasia in 2005, aged 60. Aphasia is an inability to comprehend or formulate language because of damage to specific brain regions. It affects auditory comprehension, verbal expression, reading and writing, and functional communication. I spent time watching VHS from my family archive looking for stills that could be meant to metaphorically visualize the verbal language she has lost due to the inability to speak. I was looking for some analog-based glitches that could represent this frustration, malfunction, irreparable will to give sound to thoughts and words. These are four of the original resulting artworks. Aphasia 3 is one of them.
