About the piece

This series documents the consequences of the oil spill caused by the Spanish energy company Repsol in January 2022 in Lima, Peru and highlights its effect on locals living off fishing and tourism. I initiated this project in April 2022 with my grandmother due to the anger and sadness we felt toward the situation. The images were shot in my grandmother’s neighbourhood, in Ancon, a Lima district known for its beaches and fish market. The market used to be full of people; fishermen and fish traders on one side, selling and shelling the day’s catch, and customers on the other, looking for the best deal while the pelicans are on the lookout for any fish carcass. Today, the market is closed and almost deserted, except for fishermen waiting for work to come; a few locals fishing despite the ban and risking a toxic impact; and a few remaining pelicans. Image shot on 35 mm, 10x 12 print, darkroom hand-printed.
