About the piece

I am from Madagascar. I left my country when I was 18, came back at 25, and left again at 28. My migrant status is a big part of my life and my identity. I read various reports about the loss of trust of the African youth in their own countries and governments. A survey done in 15 African countries suggests that more than half of young Africans will leave their countries in the next three years in search of better job and education opportunities, a fourth of whom have no intention of ever returning. The most striking information for me is that as much as a vast majority thinks their country and the continent is heading in the wrong direction, they remain hopeful about their individual potential and future. This project was born from this: the loss of faith in the institutions, and the unfailing hope in themselves. I collaborated with African students living in Mauritius, where I currently live, asked them to pose for me and integrated quotes found during research.
