About the piece

I was 13 when my mom signed me up for baseball. She was so excited, she spent half the night telling me about how I'd love it—the smell of the grass, the way the sun felt on your face, hitting a home run... The team was called 'Seven Up.' My coach was a mean drunk. His son cried after every game. We lost every single game. Mom stopped coming. I never played baseball again.
