Photo Vogue Resident: As an African and person of color, I have observed the portrayal of Africans in ways inauthentic to who we are, by both people outside looking in and institutions who promote narratives that are not truly us. The problem also stems from harmful cultural norms that we have come to define ourselves as. My work seeks to add, question through participating in the growing identity of South Africa and its people. I use photography as a tool to de-stigmatize matters concerning skin and how societal standards, both cultural and contemporary can be harmful to the identity of a nation and its people.
